Don’t even bother without one

In my list of 5 brew tools you should own, the auto siphon made the cut for a reason. My advice there was blunt: don’t even bother trying to transfer beer and fill bottles without this tool. Save yourself the time and trouble. It cuts down on mess, which makes bottling day so much smoother.

Leave the sediment behind

If you prime your whole batch, an auto siphon is pretty much essential. In my guide on how to prime your beer for bottle conditioning, I explain that you first want to transfer your beer into a second fermenter. The only way to do that effectively without getting a lot of debris in there is with an auto siphon. You’ll be stirring in your priming sugar, so you want as little sediment as possible. Trust me, you don’t want floaters galore in your beer!

How I use mine

In my full brewing routine, bottling day starts with placing my auto siphon in the beer and attaching the bottle filler adapter. Then I start filling my bottles with homebrew. During cleanup I even run water and cleaner through it.

Don’t forget to sanitize it

Anything that touches your beer needs to be clean and sanitized. In my cleaning and sanitizing post I share a trick: pour your used sanitizer into a big bowl and drop in your auto siphon and other small tools so you’re sanitizing everything in one contained spot. If you brew smaller batches, there’s also this mini auto siphon.

An auto siphon is one of those tools you’ll wonder how you lived without. You can brew it!
