Hey y’all! If you’ve brewed a kit or two and want an easy way to make your beer better, spray malt is one of my favorite upgrades. One I’ve linked to before is Muntons plain light spray malt.

What is spray malt?

In my gift ideas post I explain that spray malt is a dried malt extract that is used in place of sugar or brew sugar like dextrose. It gives the beer a fuller taste and will improve whatever beer it’s added to.

How I’ve used it

In my full brewing routine I talk about buying two of the cheapest kits available and upgrading them with better ingredients. With one of them, I used spray malt in place of dextrose, my regular brewing sugar. It’s a great way to experiment without spending a ton.

You can also use it when priming. In my priming guide I mention that if you want to brew a 100% malt (heavier, more bodied) beer, you can replace the beer’s sugar with spray malt during brewing and use it while priming too.

Pick the right color

This is the big one. Spray malts come in different styles (plain and hoppy) and different colors. Make sure you buy the right color and type for the beer you’re brewing: light for light beers, amber for medium-colored beers and dark for darker styles. Besides the light version above, other brands make light versions too, like Briess light dry malt extract.

A great gift, too

If you’re shopping for a brewer, spray malt makes a thoughtful gift. Just match it to the beer kit they’re brewing. Give it a try on your next batch. You can brew it!
